Indiana University Bloomington will host a special campus-community educational forum and fundraising event to honor the victims of the recent earthquake in Turkey and Syria. The event is being sponsored by twelve IU organizations.

The forum will take place at 7:00 PM on Monday, February 20 in the Frangipani Room of the Indiana Memorial Union, with a reception to follow. The event is free and open to the public and will be live-streamed as well.

The forum will feature informational lectures by three IU faculty members with expertise on various scientific and societal aspects of the disaster, reflections from IU students and community members with ties to the affected area, and music featuring the Jacobs School of Music’s Onia String Quartet.
IU faculty presenters will include Michael Hamburger, Professor of Earth & Atmospheric Sciences, speaking on “The Earthquake and Its Impacts: A Seismological/ Geological Perspective”, Kaya Sahin, Professor of History and Associate Dean of the Hamilton-Lugar School of Global & International Studies, speaking on “The Turkish Context: Social, Cultural, and Political Impacts”, and Asaad Alsaleh, Professor of Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures, speaking on “The Syrian Context: Impacts in Syria and on Syrian Refugee Community.” The event will open with a welcome from IU Provost Rahul Srivastav.
The event will include personal reflections from several IU students and community members who have had direct connections with the earthquake-affected areas. In collaboration with the two student groups, the organizers plan to use the event to raise funds in support of two non-profit organizations working in the affected areas: The Turkish Philanthropy Funds (for affected areas in Turkey) and the International Rescue Committee (for affected areas in Syria). The Turkish Students Association and Bloomington Turkish Community have also developed a GoFundMe site in support of the Turkish non-profit Ahbap, in support of search and rescue efforts in the affected area.
