The Asian American and Pacific Islander Student Body at IUB
Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) are the first and third fastest growing racial groups in the U.S. respectively, and the AAPI populations at IU Bloomington have been growing, too. Toggle through the data sets by clicking the entries in the legend.
Early records list Asian American and Asian international students in the context of the ACC, but today the Asian Culture Center serves both the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities at IU. The center follows the U.S. government's lead on terminology.
The Census first included the group "Pacific Islander" in 1990. The 1990 Census was also the first to lump together Asians and Pacific Islanders, at this time under the term "API." Throughout the years and across different organizations, government or otherwise, you will see the phrases "Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI)", "Asian Pacific American (APA)", and similar derivations.
