How does your Asian American/Pacific Islander (AAPI) identity affect your narrative? Do you see it as a ceiling/barrier? Or as a strength and part of your value proposition? Join us as we explore the importance of our stories and values to our individual and community identity. Panelists include IU alumna Audrey Lee, an Executive Coach & Global Leadership and Inclusive Diversity Strategist, and Yoojin Janice Lee, a Korean American woman committed to building social movements that are effective, compassionate and life-giving. The panel will be moderated by Sonia Lee, an Associate Professor of American Studies and Latino Studies at Indiana University
If you identify as a person of Asian descent, please come participate in the photo story project. During the session, you will create art using your passport photograph (please bring a physical copy of your passport photo if you have one, otherwise we will create it on site. You don’t have to bring your passport! All art supplies will be provided along with some light refreshments. If you and your friends are interested in participating please email acc@iu.edu. Sessions will be offered on 4/6 and 4/14. You may choose to come on one or both sessions and feel free to stay for as long as you like. This event is inspired by Dr. Vivek Vellanki's inaugural Passport Photo Project in Lansing, Michigan. Dr. Vivek Vellanski, an IU faculty at the School of Education will be at the ACC during the art sessions to answer questions and to facilitate this program.
In conjunction with the IU Arts and Humanities "Korea Remixed," this inaugural Asian American “Movement” Short Film Festival will feature several short films created by Korean American directors, as well as other up-and-coming Asian filmmakers. We will be screening "Big Happiness," directed by Da Hee Kim, "Safe Among Stars," directed by Jess X. Snow, "Chimera" directed by Eileen Yoon, "Just Another Day," directed by Prataya Saha, and "Moonwalk with Me," directed by So Young Shelly Yo. The screening is free but ticketed.
Join us for a discussion about being both Asian-American and Native American. Our panel, facilitated by Jee Yuen Lee (Korean-American) include: Debra Yepa-Pappan (Jemez Pueblo and Korean-American), Jamie Okuma (Luiseno, Shoshone-Bannock, Wailaki, and Okinawan), and Viki Eagle (Sicangu Lakota and Japanese), as they talk about their work, experiences growing up, and how they negotiate their Asian-American and Native American relations.
Hosted by Indy Hula and the Pacific Islander Student Association, learn about Polynesian song and dance, language, and culture.
Hosted by the Pacific Islander Student Association, this event is the finale of IU’s first Pacific Islander-themed week. Traditional Polynesian food will be provided.
